Houghton Forest (Whiteways)

Forestry England woodland on the South Downs above Arundel, known to locals as Whiteways. Rooty, twisting singletrack links up with fire roads across the forest, taking in bomb holes, short steep descents, small drops and rolling jumps — nothing here is waymarked or graded, so load a route before you set off. Compact enough that exploring won't get you lost, and a bridleway along the western edge links out to Bignor Hill and the South Downs Way for a longer ride. Park at Whiteways Lodge car park off the A29 (BN18 9FD); the cafe there reopened under new management after a 2025 refurbishment.
